Public input sought on literacy standards

iowa_deIowa Department of Education Director Ryan Wise today announced he’s seeking input from Iowans on the state’s literacy standards for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Wise announced two public forums on April 25-26 and an online survey following a state panel’s recommendation to seek public feedback on the current literacy standards. The standards outline learning expectations for English-language arts and for literacy in history, social studies, science, and other technical subjects.

Iowa’s academic standards are the subject of ongoing review as part of the Governor’s Executive Order 83.

“Standards are about setting consistent, rigorous learning goals statewide and leaving decisions about curriculum and teaching to local school administrators and teachers,” Wise said. “If our goal is to make sure Iowa students are ready for college and career training after high school, we must have clear, consistent statewide standards that are right for our state. That’s why public input is such a critical part of this review process.”

The review of literacy standards began in February, when Wise convened the Literacy Standards Review Team, made up of education and business leaders. Team members decided to seek input from Iowans on the current literacy standards.

Feedback from the public forums and survey will be used to provide guidance to the review team, which is expected to submit a final recommendation to the State Board of Education later this year.

The survey will be open through May 13 and can be accessed here.
